Phil Mickelson pulls out a Masterful Performance

As a sports psychologist and business keynote speaker, I am always looking for a great story for my keynote speeches. Here is one:

Phil Mickelson had a masterful performance at the Masters by using his strengths as a risk taker. On the 13th hole at August National, Phil hit his drive into the pine straw. Most people would lay up-not Phil. He is a risk-taker. That is his strength. He hit a 6 iron from behind a tree to within 5 feet. He made an easy birdie and went on to win his third green jacket.

When we use are strengths, we will be successful in golf, business and life. Phil used his strengths under intense pressure and he came out a champion.

Tiger Woods and His ability to focus is a sport psychology phenomenon

As a sports psychologist, I have always been fascinated by Tiger Woods’ ability to focus in the heat of competition.

He is about to face his toughest tournament to date at the Masters. He will need to block out all the distractions-the same questions from the media, fans heckling, and his peers saying negatives about him. But I believe Tiger is up to the test. Tiger worked with a sport psychologist for many years, who taught him how to focus intensely through a form of self-hypnosis. His Late Dad, Earl, also put him through what he called finishing school and would jiggle change in the middle of his backswing as a way to practice blocking out distractions.

He will need all his mental toughness training at this years’ Masters. My bet is he will be able to block out all of the outside world and focus on getting that little ball into the cup and of course, he has a good chance of winning the tournament-what a great story if he does!!

Tiger Woods as a brand

A recent study reported by Brian Williams on NBC said that 91% of people would not change their buying patterns, regardless of Tiger’s transgressions.

Success sells according to Brian Williams. But Tiger Woods is much more than a brand-He is the face of Golf, and he has now hurt a sport that has boomed over the last 20 years, partly because of him.

Let us hope that Tiger does not hurt the great sport he loves-and I love!

Dr. Gregg on the Peter Kessler Show

This morning (Oct 1), I was on the Peter Kessler Show on the PGA tour network on XM/Sirius. If you did not get to hear it, we covered some cool and interesting topics.

First, Peter spoke about how Arnold Palmer complimented Jack Nicklaus as having the best mental game in the business as well as the best pre-shot routine.  We then spoke how great a man and golfer Arnold Palmer is-very few would give those kinds of compliments.

We then spoke about the collapse of Kenny Perry at the Tour Championship and the Masters. Kenny Perry mentioned that he only thinks great players should win majors, and I mentioned his self-belief system is causing him to choke at big tourneys. We also talked about how he yipped his chip (sounds like a Seinfeld episode). Kenny mentioned he yipped his chip at the Masters. As we get older, we have a greater tendency to yip our putts and chips. Our nervous system begins to break down and that may cause us to do this-Kenny is 49 years old-ancient for championship golf.

We spoke about pressure-which is anxiety-which is a fear-which stems from the flight or fight response. Under pressure, hormones are released into our body. This causes our HR to raise and our eye sight to go in and out. It also causes our muscles to tighten up and choke.

Peter mentioned that Arnie thought Jack had the best waggle in the game. Waggling the club releases tension and makes you more fluid.

Perhaps, Arnie is a wise old man.
