Article in Psychology Today

My book, Full Throttle, is featured in Psychology Today in August in the article “I coulda been a contender”http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/201007/i-coulda-been-contender. In the article, I describe how to set up goals effectively by setting up strategies and then evaluating your strategies. If you are not reaching your goals, it may be that your strategies are not effective. To reach our goals we need to constantly reassess.

I hope you enjoy the article-Dr. Gregg

Coach John Wooden and his legacy

As a keynote speaker, I have used so many of Coach John Wooden sayings and his stories. He was much more than just a basketball coach, he was an inspirational leader. One of my favorite sayings from John Wooden is “Failure is not failure unless it is failure to change”. One of my favorite stories is that his first lesson of every season was how to put on your socks correctly, because if you did not put onyour socks correctly-then you would get blisters and then you could not practice or play. John Wooden knew what was important and he will be missed!

Heroes and risk taking

As a sports psychologist and keynote speaker, I am looking for great stories and messages-Here is one. Memorial Day just passed and with it goes our memories to all the heroes in the military-The men and women who take risks everyday.

While their lives are usually not the same as risk taking in business, there are many parallels.Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks who made billions on taking risks with new enterprises. Cuban mentioned that his life takes on a different hue when he is engaged in risk taking endeavors.

We have all heard it before-We must take risks to succeed-but I would also add that we should have a plan for your risk taking strategies-While it is important to leap, make sure you have a plan when you land!

Steroids for the Mind?

As a keynote business speaker and sports psychologist, I look for stories that I can tell at my seminars and to my clients. Here is one: On the show 60 minutes, they did a story in which college students are using drugs for ADHD such as Adderall and Ritalin to focus better. These drugs are stimulants which can make some people focus better. But is it fair? This is like some athletes doing anabolic steroids while others are not. Colleges should begin to think about banning Adderall and Ritalin, and perhaps random drug testing of college students for such drugs. That would be very difficult, but if we do nothing at all. we may seem an epidemic of drug users who use Ritalin and Adderall. Do we really want this?

Phil Mickelson pulls out a Masterful Performance

As a sports psychologist and business keynote speaker, I am always looking for a great story for my keynote speeches. Here is one:

Phil Mickelson had a masterful performance at the Masters by using his strengths as a risk taker. On the 13th hole at August National, Phil hit his drive into the pine straw. Most people would lay up-not Phil. He is a risk-taker. That is his strength. He hit a 6 iron from behind a tree to within 5 feet. He made an easy birdie and went on to win his third green jacket.

When we use are strengths, we will be successful in golf, business and life. Phil used his strengths under intense pressure and he came out a champion.
